Creating MP4 Hardware Compatible Files

with AAC audio

About -
This site is about creating mp4 files which can be played with hardware such as Sigma Designs Xcard.

Software you need -
Back in September 2003 it would appear that the codec you needed to use to get a hardware compatible file was the Xvid Video Codec, Koepi's Build 24th June 2003. Since then new drivers have been released significantly improving things and now many others work as well.

You need this software also or similar -

Gordian Knot.
Nero Wave Editor
mp4UI and mp4creator.

How To -

I'm guessing if your reading this you already know how to rip a DVD and save the audio to WAV and all that? If not have a look at - Ripping DVD's - Gordian Knot

Open Gordian Knot.
Use DVD Decryptor to rip the DVD.
Use DVD2AVI - decode audio to WAV and create a d2v file.

Open Nero Wave Editor.
Open audio.wav
Save audio as Nero Digital Audio - audio.mp4

I use VBR/Stereo Portable 50-70Kb/s HE-AAC - it does work with the xcard.

Go Back to Gordian Knot.
Create the MPEG-4 video file.

You already know how big your audio file is so if you want to get a movie on one CD, on the bitrate tab set the CD size to equal (707MB - ?MB) where ? is the size of your audio.mp4 file. (Note 707MB is just right for the codec mentioned earlier, but may not be right for the codec you use).

For detailed instructions have a look at - Xvid and Gordian Knot

Now that you have two files -

MPEG-4 audio file, audio.mp4
MPEG-4 video file, video.avi

It's time to add the video to the audio.mp4 file -

Open mp4UI
Open audio.mp4
Add video.avi
Optimise File

For more details look at - Mp4UI Guide

That's it.

You can play the files with Quicktime, Nero ShowTime and a few others.

Here's another method if the above doesn't appeal to you.

Nero Recode is a simple way of converting DVD to mp4, if you find Nero Recode won't accept the DVD movie you want to copy, rip the DVD with DVD Decryptor using "File Mode" (select "File" from the "Mode" menu) and make sure you highlight VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.BUP and VTS_01_0.BUP as well as the main feature. Now open Nero StartSmart and choose "Burn DVD-Video Files" and burn your movie, selecting "Image Recorder" as your DVD-burner (so you don't actually need a DVD burner). Once you have burnt your movie.nrg, load it into Nero ImageDrive. Now you can use Nero Recode to convert your DVD to mp4.

MP4 and Linux

You might want to check this site out if your interested in streaming MP4, "this is the best how to i read ever about mp4creator". The first section is about making mp4 files but if you scroll down further you'll see a heading - Setting Up the Darwin Streaming Server. There's a version of Darwin for Windows Server 2003 also.
